WELL … “Times are hard” (and food prices are only going to go up ! ) … but we still want to buy food that is healthy and is grown in a sustainable and ethical way ! … SO …
We have formed a co-operative to collectively bulk-buy organic wholefoods … (NOT including fresh vegetables and fruit !)
It meets on the first Monday every other month at the Transition Town Brixton ”Shared Space” evenings at the Loughborough Centre, to place orders which are then collected on the following Monday, saving between 25% to 40% on retail prices. At the moment the coop is ordering every 2 months from Infinity Foods in Brighton (catalogue).
The next meeting will be at 7.00 p.m. on August 6th at the next ‘Shared Space’ event in the Loughborough Centre. The coop has decided to finalize the orders face-to-face as this is a good way to sort out the bulk orders, but it is also possible to join in the order if you can’t make the meeting.
You need to get your proposed order into the spreadsheet as early as possible and latest by the Friday before the meeting, which is 3rd August. Then it will be finalized and paid for at the meeting.
Formed in 2010 and originally named the SE11 Wholefood Buyers’ Coop, it has been renamed and now comes under the wing of TTB as most of the members are from Stockwell and Brixton.
See the Transition Town Brixton Wholefood Organic Food-Buying Coop website for more information, including why it’s good to buy organic food and why the coop has chosen to order from Infinity Foods. There is also a link to join the Food Coop Google group (which you need to do to join the coop) and details of how to enter your order on the spreadsheet.
It’s also a good way to meet people interested in food and to find out new foods and recipes, as in order to bulk buy you may need to persuade others to order something new. If you want to order something unusual, one suggestion is to bring along a sample for other people to try.
