What is the London Plan?

The Mayor’s London Plan for London til 2031

What is the London Plan?

The consultation draft replacement London Plan is open for public comment from 12 October 2009 to 12 January 2010. This sets out a framework for the next 20 to 25 years and includes many aspects relating to Transition Towns, for example ‘urban greening’, food growing, manufacturing from recycled waste and walking.

The Food and Growing Group Submission to the Mayor

There are a number of issues that could be raised, as listed in the notes (see link at the bottom of this page), but I have chosen only one due to lack of time and need to put time into other projects. LondonPlanSubmission

How does the consultation work?

The draft is out for public consultation til 12th Jan 2010. Any submission we make will be examined by an independent panel. The next stage is the holding of an examination in public (EiP), next summer and autumn. People who have made submissions may then be called to discuss their submissions with the panel. The panel will produce a report with recommendations. The Mayor can decide to accept or reject these. He will then send his final draft to Ministers, who have six weeks to decide whether to direct that changes should be made.

How is this useful to Transition Town planning?

It is a useful document to read and comment on for the possibility of influencing policy, but also in relation to our own planning in the Energy Descent Action Plan. Note that, once it is adopted, this document will be legally binding on the local councils. It may be useful to quote targets and policies in making applications for grants, or in support of arguments. Also I have found planning aspects that I was unaware of.

Notes on London Plan  We have a copy of the plan, which is also available online (here), and I have been studying it with reference to the food and growing aspects. However, though the my notes are mostly food and growing related, I have referenced other aspects as well, if they seemed significant.
